Expanded Clay — A Lightweight and Durable Filler for All Construction Needs
Expanded clay (also known as expanded clay gravel) is a lightweight, porous filler made by firing special types of clay in rotary kilns at temperatures between 1100–1200°C.
Thanks to this high-temperature treatment, each granule is encased in a strong ceramic shell, with sealed pores inside.
This gives the material both lightness and strength, along with excellent thermal and sound insulation properties.
Today, expanded clay is widely used in residential, commercial, and industrial construction. It is ideal for insulating floors, roofs, and walls, and is also used in the production of lightweight concrete and expanded clay blocks.
Due to its durability, eco-friendliness, and low thermal conductivity, expanded clay remains one of the most popular and reliable construction materials on the market.

Expanded clay (also known as lightweight expanded clay aggregate or LECA) is a lightweight, strong, and eco-friendly filler produced by firing clay-rich materials in rotary kilns at 1100–1200 °C. During the process, each granule forms a dense ceramic shell with closed air pores inside. This structure makes expanded clay a unique material combining thermal insulation, lightness, and durability
Fields of Application:
Technical Specifications:
Scientific Fact:
1. Low Thermal Conductivity (λ)
Delivery Formats:
Expanded clay has a thermal conductivity of 0.08–0.16 W/m·K (depending on density). This is due to its porous structure filled with air — one of the best natural insulators.
Comparison with other materials:
Conclusion: Although mineral wool and styrofoam have lower λ-values, they deform under pressure and pose fire risks. Expanded clay remains stable, fire-resistant, and durable over time.
2. Optimal Weight with High Load Resistance
Technical Insight:
With a density of 250–600 kg/m³, expanded clay is ideal for roofs and suspended floors.
It is light enough to reduce structural load yet strong enough to withstand snow, wind, and foot traffic.
Mineral wool deforms under load — leading to heat loss.
Styrofoam is sensitive to UV, frost, and mechanical damage.
Expanded clay retains shape and resists compression.
3. Water-Repellent and Frost-Resistant
Scientific Insight:
While porous, each granule has a fired ceramic shell that resists water penetration and frost cycles (≥ 300 freeze-thaw cycles).
The material "breathes," reducing mold and mildew risks — ideal for rooftops and foundations.
4. Non-Flammable — A Key to Fire Safety
Standard Compliance (GOST 30244):
Expanded clay is classified as non-combustible (NG).
Styrofoam becomes highly flammable under sun exposure.
Fire safety regulations (e.g., SNIP, GOST, SP 131.13330.2012) prohibit flammable insulation materials on rooftops of multi-storey buildings.
Expanded clay emits no smoke or toxic gases under heat.
5. Long Lifespan — Maintains Properties Over Time
Practical Evidence:
Expanded clay has a lifespan of 50+ years without degradation.
Mineral wool and styrofoam degrade after 10–15 years due to structural breakdown.
6. High Thermal Inertia
Expanded clay heats and cools slowly — stabilizing indoor temperature and reducing sudden fluctuations.
Especially useful for upper floors and attics, enhancing building energy efficiency.
7. Easy to Apply
Expanded clay can be used as a dry fill or poured over with concrete.
Combined with concrete, it provides a dual-layer system:

  • Lower layer: thermal insulation
  • Upper layer: structural strength

Widely used in industrial buildings, warehouses, residential structures, greenhouses, and hangars.
FINAL COMPARISON TABLE:
USES OF EXPANDED CLAY
Expanded clay is an economical and effective insulator for inter-floor slabs, roofing structures, underfloor spaces, plinths, and basements.
In addition, it is used in the construction of cavity walls, heating networks, sewage, and water supply systems.
It is often used for making backfill for various types of constructions.
It has found wide use in the agricultural sector for drainage in the cultivation of fruit and berry crops, protecting seedlings from rotting.

It is indispensable for organizing drainage by mixing with soil to improve air circulation in the root zone of saplings.
Expanded clay is widely used in the production of cellular concrete.
Its excellent thermal insulation properties have made it popular as an insulator for private and multi-apartment houses.
It is used as a filler for dry screeds, a component of cement-sand mixtures, a soundproofing gasket, a microclimate-regulating material, an absorbent for treatment filters, and as an element of landscape design, and in the production of expanded clay concrete blocks.
