EXPANDED CLAY IN LANDSCAPING AND GREENING
EXPANDED CLAY IN LANDSCAPE DESIGN
Expanded clay colored with natural pigments is widely used in landscape design. It is placed as a top layer in flower beds. Different colors can highlight each plant or be combined into attractive arrangements that match the overall landscape theme.
Expanded clay is used to fill open areas in rock gardens and mini-gardens. It covers rockeries and levels flower bed surfaces. It looks aesthetically pleasing on garden paths. It can be used to decorate lounge area borders and emphasize ornamental ponds. Beyond decoration, the granules also serve a practical purpose by effectively suppressing weed growth.
Indoor plants, herbs, berries, and vegetables are increasingly being grown using hydroponic methods. This technique involves using a solid artificial medium and water instead of soil. Expanded clay granules replace the soil — their high porosity allows them to absorb nutrients and water, then gradually release them to the plant roots. This ensures controlled nutrient delivery, supporting healthy plant development and improved yields.
Root systems ventilate well within the granules due to the non-compacting nature of the material. It keeps plants stable and enhances root development. The chosen granule size depends on how long water reserves need to be retained. Fine-grain expanded clay is ideal for cuttings.
This hydroponic method is often used for houseplants, where granules are placed in the main container along with the plant, and a nutrient solution is stored in a secondary lower reservoir. It works well for plants such as anthurium, kalanchoe, hibiscus, euphorbia, and violets.

EXPANDED CLAY IN HORTICULTURE AND FLORICULTURE
Expanded clay sand, with granules no larger than 5 mm, is used to improve soil structure. It is mixed with soil before planting. This approach prevents water stagnation that can cause root rot and reduces the risk of various diseases caused by excessive moisture. The use of expanded clay is especially important in clay soils.
Another method for creating drainage involves layering soil and expanded clay gravel. This method is ideal for growing fruit and ornamental shrubs and trees, especially in low-lying areas or near bodies of water. The bottom of the planting pit is filled with expanded clay, followed by soil where the root system is placed, and then topped with a mixture of soil and clay granules.
Fine-grain material is also used for mulching. This technique helps retain moisture, reduces the risk of fungus and mold, minimizes the need for frequent watering, and protects plants during droughts. The unique properties of expanded clay promote heavy dew formation in the morning and evening, creating a natural "dry watering" effect.
During winter, expanded clay granules protect the root systems of trees and shrubs from freezing. Due to its chemical neutrality, it does not alter the soil’s pH level. The material retains its original properties outdoors for long periods, thanks to its resistance to biological and weather-related impacts.
Expanded clay is a lightweight, durable, versatile, and affordable material. It is widely used in hydroponics and serves as an excellent soil loosener. In gardens and parks, it is applied to create striking landscape compositions. There are many types of expanded clay that differ in structure, grain size, and intended use.
